ANGLE BAY WINDOW
A series of windows installed in a "bay" which is two flanker units and a center unit. Flankers are usually set at 30° or 45° to the center unit.
ARGON GAS
A colorless, odorless gas used to fill the airspace between insulating glass. The addition of Argon gas to Low E glass increases the insulating performance.

AWNING WINDOW
A combination of frame and sash, hinged at the top of the vertical jambs which allows the bottom of the sash to open to the exterior of the building.

BALANCES
A system of spiral balances used in Double Hung windows.
BEVEL
A cut made at an angle other than a right angle.
BLIND STOP
The frame member on a Tilt Double Hung located between the jambs and the brick mould. The blind stop forms a rabbet that supports either a storm window or screen.
BOTTOM RAIL
The bottom horizontal member of a sash or door panel.
BOW WINDOW
A series of adjoining window units installed on a radius.
BRICK MOULD
The exterior trim applied to the side jambs and head jamb on wood units. May be used to install a primed window into the rough opening.

CAM LOCK
A lever operated lock which is used to lock the sash into the frame.
CAPILLARY TUBES
A tube inserted into the insulating glass spacer that allows the inside and outside air pressure to equalize.
CASEMENT WINDOW
A combination of frame and sash, hinged at one side jamb, which allows the window to open 90°.
CHECK RAIL (MEETING RAIL)
The horizontal members of a Tilt Double Hung sash that meet. Also includes the vertical members of a slide/by sash which meet.
CIRCLE TOP (ROUND TOP)
Generally a semi-circle direct-set window which can be used separately or stacked to another window or door. Available in quarter circles, half circles, half ellipses, arch tops, ellipses, full circles and gothic arch tops.
CLAD
Refers to wood window and door parts which are covered with aluminum or vinyl on the exterior side of the frame and/or sash.

DAYLITE OPENING
The measurement denoting the width and height of visible glass.
DIRECT-SET
Refers to a unit in which the glass is glazed directly into the frame, with no sash members. The unit is stationary.
DOUBLE-HUNG
Tilt windows have two movable sash which operate independently of each other and are held in the open position with the use of spiral balances. The sash tilt to the interior for cleaning.
